Introduction

Vertebroneurology

Vertebroneurology is a clinical discipline, a branch of neurology, based on functional and organic disorders of the peripheral nervous system in diseases of the spinal column and structures of the musculoskeletal system.

As a separate direction was founded in the middle of the 20th century and is now developing rapidly.
The reasons for this are: the growing number and diversity of spine diseases and the technical possibilities of neuroimaging (magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography) that contribute to the expansion of the evidence base and the development of adequate therapies. Therefore, the isolation of a separate direction of vertebroneurology from neurology is a tribute to the time and is associated with the widespread prevalence of vertebrogenic diseases.

Due to the complexity of the lesion of the nervous, vascular, muscular, osteoarticular systems, vertebroneurology can be called an “interdisciplinary branch” combining other branches of medicine: orthopedics, therapy, surgery, physiotherapy, manual therapy, physical rehabilitation.

In the “arsenal” of vertebroneurology about 30 different diseases, and practically at the base of each lies the vertebral-motor segment (PDS) in normal and pathological process, with secondary biomechanical disorders from the musculoskeletal system and muscular-fascial structures.

The task of vertebroneurology in the near future will be the creation of a comprehensive, holistic approach to understanding the pathology of the spine and restorative treatment and rehabilitation of vertebro neurological patients.
